Join the krewe

Get in where you fit in! We welcome young people ages 9-25 with Autism and other exceptionalities to join our parade group. Workshops will take place Saturdays from 12:30-2:00 on 12/2, 12/9, 12/16, 12/30, 1/6, and 1/13, followed by the parade at 7 pm on 1/20.

We encourage people from all racial/economic/cultural backgrounds to apply. We offer a sliding scale, allowing families to pay what they can afford. The full cost for workshops and parade is $350 + $50 for materials.

To keep the learning environment safe and effective, we require participants to meet behavior guidelines (see below) but all cognitive abilities and communication styles are welcomed!

 

Volunteer with us

We rely on volunteers to guide, assist, and encourage participants during workshops and during the parade. We offer a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience with special needs individuals in a fun and affirming environment that promotes disability pride and neurodiversity. Workshops will take place Saturdays from 12:30-2:00 on J12:30-2:00 on 12/2, 12/9, 12/16, 12/30, 1/6, and 1/13, followed by the parade at 7 pm on 1/20.

We encourage adults of all backgrounds and cognitive styles to volunteer, including People of Color and neurodivergent individuals.

Volunteer roles can be adapted to academic requirements, skills, and abilities. We offer positions in teaching assistance, behavior support, music performance, administration, and craft preparation.

Behavior Requirements for Participation

Participants will be accepted without regard to social, academic, motor or communication skills. However, to ensure that all participants have a safe, positive and fully supported experience, we can only accept those who meet the following behavioral criteria:

1. Remains in a group without wandering or elopement

2. Tolerates routine frustrations without aggression (hitting, kicking, spitting, destroying property, etc.) or excessive disruption (tantrumming, screaming, cursing, defiance etc.) or can be redirected

3. Able to execute simple, clear directions and follow rules

4. Able to eat, drink and use bathroom independently

I understand that young people with special needs may have a range of unpredictable behaviors, including but not limited to aggression, elopement, inappropriate language, grabbing, breaking materials and throwing objects. I affirm that my child meets that behavior requirements laid out in the registration form and can abide by the safety rules of NOLArts.

While NOLArts staff screens participants and makes every effort to ensure the comfort and safety of all participants I recognize that the nature of special needs means that participants may emit inappropriate behaviors which will be detrimental and potentially hazardous to others or themselves.

I further understand that my child will be participating in physical activities including dancing, drumming, flag and baton twirling, hula hooping and other forms of moderate movement and exercise. I agree to inform NOLArts of any physical limitations or special medical conditions which would inhibit my child’s participation in such activities. I will release NOLArts and First Grace UMC from any liability related to harm through the use or misuse of art and performance related materials and tools.

I understand that Tulane maker space is a working lab with high-tech equipment on hand which may be broken or cause injury if accessed by a child without permission or misused.

Having read this waiver and knowing these facts and in consideration of the opportunity to participate in NOLArts’ activities, I, for myself and for anyone entitled to act on my behalf, waive and release NOLArts Learning Center, First Grace UMC , and their owners, directors, officers, agents, volunteers, staff, all sponsors, their representatives and successors from all claims or liabilities of any kind arising out of my child’s participation. As such, I also agree to defend, indemnify and forever hold harmless NOLArts Learning Center, and First Grace UMC of and from any and all possible claims which may be asserted by me, or anyone acting on my behalf.

WAIVER, RELEASE OF LIABILITY AND INDEMNITY AGREEMENT for THE INTERGALACTIC KREWE OF CHEWBACCHUS, 501(c)(3) and NOLARTS LEARNING CENTER

In consideration for the opportunity to be a member of the Intergalactic Krewe of Chewbacchus and to participate in the NOLArts subkrewe, 501(c)(3), I agree as follows:

I know that participating in a Mardi Gras Marching Krewe such as Chewbacchus is a potentially hazardous activity and understand that there are certain inherent dangers related to Mardi Gras Krewe participation. I agree not to participate in the Chewbacchus Krewe activities unless I am medically able and properly prepared. I agree to abide by any rules, regulations or decisions made by the Chewbacchus’ Overlords relative to the activities necessary to safely participate in this organization’s activities, which include but are not limited to: the parading of the Krewe and the Krewe Ball, also known as the Chewbacchanal. I assume all risks associated with participating in all aspects of the Intergalactic Krewe of Chewbacchus, 501(c)(3), including, but not limited to, falling, fatigue, physical injuries, contact with other participants, the effects of the weather, including high heat and/or humidity, and all such risks being known and appreciated by me. Responsible and legal consumption of alcohol is allowed during the Chewbacchus activities. I understand that it is my responsibility to make sure that I follow all laws at all times while in the parade, including, but not limited to, laws regarding public consumption of alcohol and public intoxication.

I know that creation of parade related costumes, props and floats is a potentially hazardous activity and understand that there are certain inherent dangers related to participation. I agree not to participate in any creative activity for which I am not fully prepared and medically able. I agree to follow directions from and abide by decisions made by NOLArts staff, volunteers and administration relative to the activities necessary to safely participate in creative activities, which include but are not limited to: painting, sewing, building and assembling. I assume all risks associated with participating in all aspects of creative activity including, but not limited to, cuts, falls, contact with other participants, and all such risks being known and appreciated by me.

Having read this Intergalactic Krewe of Chewbacchus and NOLArts Learning Center waiver and knowing these facts and in consideration of the opportunity to participate in Chewbacchus’ activities, I, for myself and for anyone entitled to act on my behalf, waive and release the Intergalactic Krewe of Chewbacchus, 501(c)(3), NOLArts Learning Center, their Overlords, Captains, owners, directors, officers, agents, volunteers, staff, all sponsors, their representatives and successors from all claims or liabilities of any kind arising out of my participation in the Krewe. As such, I also agree to defend, indemnify and forever hold harmless the Intergalactic Krewe of Chewbacchus, 501(c)(3), NOLArts Learning Center of and from any and all possible claims which may be asserted by me, or anyone acting on my behalf.

Photo Release Form (optional)

I hereby grant the NOLArts Learning Center permission to use my child’s likeness in a photograph, video, or other digital media (“photo”) in any and all of its publications, including web-based publications, without payment or other consideration. I understand that photos may be accompanied by identifying language which can include labels such as “young people with special needs,” or “students with Autism.”

I understand and agree that all photos will become the property of NOLArts Learning Center and will not be returned.

I hereby irrevocably authorize NOLArts Learning Center to edit, alter, copy, exhibit, publish, or distribute these photos for any lawful purpose. In addition, I waive any right to inspect or approve the finished product wherein my likeness appears. Additionally, I waive any right to royalties or other compensation arising or related to the use of the photo.

I hereby hold harmless, release, and forever discharge NOLArts Learning Center from all claims, demands, and causes of action which I, my heirs, representatives, executors, administrators, or any other persons acting on my behalf or on behalf of my estate have or may have by reason of this authorization.

COVID-19 SAFETY PROCEDURES & PROTOCOLS

Vaccines:

  • Full vaccinations (2 doses of either Pizer or Moderna) are required for all staff, instructors, and students

  • Proof of vaccination will be required

Scheduling:

  • Instruction can be split into smaller groups to alleviate physical distancing concerns

  • Extra time will be provided in the schedule for cleaning protocols and to allow for airflow changes.

Space for Instruction:

  • Instruction will be held in the largest spaces in the building or outside.

  • In collaboration with program site partners, site-based protocols will be developed for effective ventilation, which includes opening windows and using HEPA air filters.

  • Students may be provided with assigned seats and areas for contact tracing.

  • Student spaces will be marked ( stickers, tape, or dots), building in enough room for the teacher to move between students to facilitate.

  • Door jambs/props will be used so students don’t have to touch the door handle.

  • The number of students per class will be limited.

Safety

  • Mask Up! Everyone, at all times, including outside – with bell covers for wind instruments.

  • Distance – Follow CDC guidelines of providing 3 feet of distance between students, both in indoor and outdoor program spaces.

  • Time – Classes may be shortened to no more than 50 minutes at a time indoors, and may need to be shortened to provide time for all cleaning protocols, and to allow time for air change in the room.

  • Hygiene – CDC guidelines with site-base protocols for cleaning/disinfecting all instruments, materials, equipment and shared spaces aligned with CDC and NAfME guidance. Wash hands and use sanitizers.

Food and Nutrition:

  • Adults and students must wear masks at all times when handling food or picking up meals.

  • Washing or sanitizing hands will be required before picking up meals or handling food.
